Views of Ranquitte

gadiram_marche.jpg

The photo above shows the open-air market in an area of Ranquitte called Gardiram. On Tuesdays of every week people from all around the area come to Gardiram and sell their wares, supplies, fruits and vegetables, and meat.  The market is as much of a social institution as it is an economic engine.  Most people in Haiti survive on 400 dollars US a year or less.

fet_drapo_parade.jpg

Fet Drapo (Flag Day) May 24th, 2003.
The two pictures show the zeal of the people and the pride of Haitians.  There must have been 5000 paper flags distributed through Ranquitte for the parade.  It was the Bicentenial Celebration of the day it is said that Jean-Jacques Dessalines symbolically ripped the white of the French flag to create the Haitian flag.
